The Final Verdict of Awareness
Neuroscientist: We may never agree, Ibn Sīnā. I will continue to look for the "self" in the synaptic gaps, believing that we are stardust that has learned to think. To me, the "Soul" is a beautiful name for the most complex system in the known universe.
Avicenna: And I will continue to point to the "Floating Man." For even if you mapped every atom of the brain, you would still be left with the one who is looking at the map. The Soul is not an object to be found; it is the subject that finds. Until you can explain the "I" that remains when the world is stripped away, your science remains a description of the cage, while ignoring the bird within.
The debate over the self is the debate over what it means to be human. Whether we are machines or miracles, the inquiry itself proves we are more than simple matter.
